The Do’s & Don'ts Of Applying Tile Sealer: Tips & Tricks For A Successful Project

If you own your home, you might be considering applying tile sealer in your bathrooms and kitchen (or perhaps even in your tiled outdoor spaces). Whether it’s sealing the grout around your bathroom tiles or using a penetrating sealer on your outdoor patio tiles, knowing how to properly apply tile sealer can help you protect your home and make it look even better. Let’s explore the do's and don'ts of tile sealing in Melbourne

Do’s

  • Start by cleaning the tiles with a mild detergent and water solution prior to sealing them. Be sure to allow the area to dry completely before proceeding with the application of the sealer.
  • Apply a single layer of sealer using a foam brush or cloth rag, focusing on one section at a time until complete coverage is achieved. Be sure not to overlap any areas, or the sealant will not be effective.
  • Allow each coat of sealant to dry completely before applying another coat – typically between 1-2 hours depending on drying conditions. This is a critical step - if you don't wait long enough between coats, they won't adhere correctly!
  • Wait 24 hours after sealing has been completed before allowing foot traffic back into the area - this ensures that the sealant has adhered correctly and will last much longer than if it had not been given time to properly set up.

Don’ts

  • Do not apply additional sealer to an area that has already been sealed, as this could cause discolouration or other issues with your tiling as well as potentially damaging it beyond repair.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbing tools when cleaning tiles prior to sealing - they can damage the surface, which will make it more difficult for the sealant to adhere properly and create an even finish when applied later on down the line.
  • Do not try to rush through the process. Take your time when applying each coat of sealer, as this will ensure it covers all areas evenly and effectively, so you get maximum protection out of it.
  • Do not apply too many coats of sealant at once, as this could also cause discolouration or bubbling, which would ultimately lead to having to start all over again from scratch.

Applying tile sealer is an important part of protecting your tile surfaces from dirt, grime and other debris that can cause them harm over time if left unchecked and untreated - but if done incorrectly, it can actually do more harm than good!
