Seasons change: your autumn home to-do list

Many Australians think that just because the summer is over they can then neglect their backyard throughout the year’s cooler months. Of course, you could let it run wild, but that would just make it messy and unsightly, not to mention give you a bigger job to do once the weather picks up again!

Instead, there are a bunch of semi-cruisy tasks you can do to keep your garden as well as your home looking schmick and remaining comfortable throughout autumn and winter.

Things like cleaning leaves and debris, planting spring flowering bulbs, checking your heating and keeping your barbie covered with the best bbq covers for sale are just some of the things that we’ll be covering.

Check out your ultimate autumn home to-do list below:

  1. Clean the debris

Those autumn leaves falling through the trees might look gorgeous, but you really don’t want them engulfing your plants and grass. So, all you have to do is get your rake and occasionally transfer the leaves to your compost bin. Autumn leaves make for nutrient-rich composting material that will be a dream to use later on at your home garden.

  1. Move important furniture inside

The absolute worst thing that can happen to your furniture in the autumn and winter months is cop a deluge from some wild storms that come rolling through. Autumn and winter can be pretty wild in Australia, especially in the southern states, and for this you should really consider putting your favourite outdoor furniture into storage for a summer’s day!

  1. Cover the rest

If you can’t fit everything into your garage then the least you can do is cover the remaining furniture and appliances. You can pick up high quality furniture and bbq covers from renowned home stores, and they can ensure your furniture and appliances will be kept safe when a storm comes in.

  1. Check your heating

What could be worse than not having a proper heating system in the winter months? Australian winters can be outrageously frightful - it’s not all sun and sand here - so one of the most important things to check is that your home’s heating system is working efficiently, and if it isn’t you will still have plenty of time to call in the repairs team to ensure it is good to go for those freezing winter nights (and days for that matter!).

  1. Review safety appliances

This is a good time of the year to ensure your home’s safety appliances are running at full capacity. You may even want to change the batteries of appliances like fire detectors to ensure it is running with full battery life. This is something that can be done at any time of the year so there really is no right time to do it, but seeing as you’re already prepping the home for winter then why not?!

  1. Ready your lawn for winter

Your home’s lawn can fall victim to the leaves that fall in the autumn months, with the leaves potentially smothering your lawn. Rake these away before fertilising and winterise the lawn so that it can go through the icy months without incurring much damage.

  1. Clean the house

If you’ve taken it pretty easy in the warmer months and have let the home get a bit unsightly then why not clean it before it gets too chilly? After all, you probably won’t want to bother taking out all that junk when it's freezing outside, so now is the perfect time to ensure your home is spotless for when all you want to do is get cosy on the couch and watch an awesome film!
