3 Nostalgic Video Games from the 90’s that Have Hit the Big Screens

  • Written by News Co

The world of video games has long evolved since Nintendo’s invention of the Family Computer (known as Famicom) in1983. Since Nintendo’s pioneer into the game console industry, the world has been introduced to other creations including the Game Boy, Super Nintendo, Wii, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles and with it, the evolution of video games. With thousands of new and trending Gameboy, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox roms, it is not uncommon for these classic and nostalgic video games to hit the big screens and generate massive sales in movie tickets.

Mortal Kombat

It’s been 25 years since the iconic arcade game Mortal Kombat made its debut in 1992. The game marked as a pivotal point in the gaming industry and although it is similar to Capcom’s Street Fighter, another one-on-one combat fighting game, Mortal Kombat proved to be just as popular. The “realistic” characteristics and visual aesthetics during that gaming era proved to be more gruesome compared to Street Fighter’s cartoonish features.

While the original film, Mortal Kombat, was released in 1995, there have been talks about a new upcoming reboot and is expected to be an intense and R-Rated version of the popular superhero movie, The Avengers. As film adaptations of video games and comic series are becoming more popular, Mortal Kombat is only one of many expected to resurface from the nostalgic 90’s gaming days.

Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII made its first appearance in 1997 and is still considered a fan favorite and the most popular game in the Final Fantasy series. Square Enix is currently in the works of the long-awaited remake of the video game, but the elite warrior and protagonist, Cloud, has made several other appearances including in the 2005 movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children takes place two years after the storyline in the role-playing video game ends. The movie was released in Japan and has captivated nostalgic fans worldwide for its polished features and compelling fight scenes. Due to the popularity of the game and movie, Square Enix has launched the complex production of Final Fantasy VII Remake with no set release date, but plans to be release in episodes.

Tomb Raider

Since its first release in 1996, Tomb Raider has created a long list of remakes, reboots, and film adaptations of the original game. The protagonist, Lara Croft, has gone through a series of adventures escaping tomb traps in the puzzle solving video game Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris or trekking through South Africa in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the last installment of the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy.

The popularity and remakes have inspired the movies, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life that were both released in the early 2000’s featuring Hollywood actress, Angelina Jolie. Almost 15 years later, Tomb Raider, has returned to the screens featuring a new Lara Croft while adapting the storyline from the 2013 Tomb Raider video game.
